Florida Medigap plan guide
Medicare Supplement Plan A in Florida
Core benefits with more costs left to you
Plan A starts with the core Medigap benefits. It helps with hospital and medical coinsurance, but leaves both Medicare deductibles and skilled nursing facility coinsurance to you.
What does Medicare Supplement Plan A cover?
These are standardized benefits for the current plan design. Percentages describe the share of the listed benefit the policy pays, subject to Medicare and policy rules. They are not percentages of every medical bill.
| Benefit | Plan A pays |
|---|---|
| Part A coinsurance and up to 365 additional hospital days after Medicare benefits are used | 100% |
| Part B coinsurance or copayments | 100% |
| First 3 pints of blood | 100% |
| Part A hospice coinsurance or copayments | 100% |
| Skilled nursing facility coinsurance | Not covered |
| Part A deductible | Not covered |
| Part B deductible | Not covered |
| Part B excess charges | Not covered |
| Foreign travel emergency care, subject to plan limits | Not covered |
Foreign travel benefits, when included, have a separate deductible, time limits, and a lifetime maximum. The policy pays only for expenses that meet its terms.
Who might consider Plan A?
Consider Plan A if you want the basic benefit package and can budget for deductibles and other uncovered charges. Compare actual premiums: fewer benefits do not guarantee the lowest price.
Plan A vs. Plan B
Plan B adds coverage for the Part A deductible. Compare the extra annual premium with the hospital deductible exposure you would keep under Plan A. Explore Plan B.
How much does Plan A cost in Florida?
There is no single statewide premium. Your ZIP code, age, tobacco use, insurer, discounts, and applicable underwriting can affect your quote. Standardized benefits for the same plan letter match across insurers, but premiums and service can differ.
Compare the monthly premium, what you would pay when you receive care, and how the insurer prices renewals. Request quotes with the same effective date and benefit design. The lowest starting premium may not produce the lowest long-term cost.
What Medigap does not cover
New Medigap policies do not include outpatient prescription drug coverage. You may need a separate Medicare Part D plan, with its own premium and cost sharing. Medigap generally does not cover routine dental or vision care, hearing aids, or long-term custodial care. You continue paying your Medicare premiums as well as the Medigap premium.
When can you buy a Medigap policy in Florida?
Your federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months, starting the first month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During this window, insurers cannot deny an offered policy or charge more because of your health. A pre-existing condition waiting period may apply in some cases.
Outside that window, medical underwriting may apply unless you have guaranteed issue rights or another protection. The October 15–December 7 Medicare enrollment period does not create a new Medigap open enrollment window. Florida also has protections for Medicare beneficiaries under 65; ask us to check the rules that apply to you before you change coverage.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Plan A outside Florida?
With a standard Medigap policy, you can generally see providers who accept Medicare throughout the United States. Medicare SELECT policies can have network requirements for full benefits; check the policy type.
Is Plan A the same as Medicare Advantage?
No. Medigap supplements Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage is a different way to receive Medicare benefits. Medigap cannot pay Medicare Advantage copayments.
Can I switch to Plan A at any time?
You can apply outside open enrollment, but acceptance and price may depend on underwriting unless a protection applies. Confirm approval and effective dates before ending existing coverage.
