What is a Medicare Advantage Plan?
Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, offer several advantages over Medicare Supplements. In many cases, Medicare advantage plans will be significantly less expensive than using a Medigap plan. A Medigap plan can cost between $100.00 and $300.00 a month, while many Medicare Advantage plans typically have much lower premiums than Medicare Supplement plans.
When most people hear an insurance plan costs less, they assume the plan can’t be any good; this is certainly not the case here. Most Part C plans offer significantly enhanced benefits over traditional Medicare supplement plans, i.e., prescription, vision, hearing, and dental coverage. Plans vary by area and insurance company, so be sure to use our easy Plan Search to find Florida Medicare Advantage plans available in your area.
Is a Medicare Advantage Plan Right For You?
When considering your health insurance options, you likely have a lot of questions. Should you choose a Medicare Advantage plan? What about a Medicare supplement plan? Which company should I choose? And then you need to decide what plan option is right for me? All of these are valid questions, and the answers depend on your needs.
There are several basic plan designs, with two being the most common: Medicare Advantage HMO, and Medicare Advantage PPO. While each plan will vary in benefits, the difference between the HMO and PPO is the network of providers. An HMO plan requires the use of a specific network in a specific geographic region. The PPO on the other hand offers a little more flexibility in the providers you can see. Many PPO plans will allow you the ability to see non-network providers at a higher cost.
Whether a PPO or HMO Medicare Advantage plan is right for you will usually be determined by your ability to adhere to the network rules. This also means you will need to reside within the network service area as well. If you are able to adhere to the network requirements of the plan, then it may be an excellent option for you. Should you travel outside the network area often, or find it difficult working within the network, a Medicare supplement would most likely be a better option for you. If you can work within the network requirements, there are a host of benefits that await you.

Prescriptions
To get prescription drug coverage with traditional Medicare, you will need to purchase a stand-alone prescription drug plan. Fortunately, many plans include prescription drug coverage. Additionally, prescription plans will vary for each insurance company (Even different plans with the same insurer will vary). Be sure to review the prescription benefits and formulary carefully to ensure your needs will be met.
